Abbiamo intervistato DASECA Productions, un’etichetta discografica, per quanto riguarda la Reggae-Dancehall Music, che sta spopolando in tutto il mondo.Hanno prodotto riddims come il “Chakka Chakka” per Fire Links, il “Gully Sitn” per Foota Hype, lo “Steps” (“We Be Burnin’”di Sean Paul), l’ ”Anger Management” e i famosissimi “Wipe Out” e “Air Waves”.
D: Qual’è stato il vostro primo approcio con la Reggae music? Come avete iniziato a produrre riddims, e quali sono state le vostre prime produzioni?
R: DASECA ha iniziato a produrre nel 2001 ed è formata da tre persone: io, Craig Harrisingh, mio fratello David Harrisingh e Craig “Serani” Marsh.
All’inizio facevamo pezzi per gli altri, tipo Don Corleon, poi quando abbiamo deciso di farlo per noi stessi, la prima vera produzione è stata di un riddim che non è andato molto bene perchè entrare in questo business non è facile, devi pagare un prezzo per ciò che fai. Quindi la gente dice che il nostro primo riddim è l’Anger Management, anche se questo è solo quello che ci ha reso famosi, ma prima ne abbiamo fatti molti per altra gente, come per Sean Paul, “We’ll be burning”, o Tony Matterhorn, “Dutty Wine”, o Super Hype.
D: Cosa vuol dire DASECA?
R: DASECA viene molto semplicemente dalle iniziali dei nostri nomi, quindi “Da” per David, “Se” per Serani e “Ca” per Craig. Abbiamo semplicemente messo insieme i nostri nomi e abbiamo ottenuto qualcosa che ci piaceva, qualcosa di creativo.
D: Quali sono i ruoli di ognuno? Se ne avete.
R: in realtà ognuno di noi fa un po’ tutto, cioè suonare le tastiere, registrare e produrre.
D: Ma Serani non è solo un producer, ma anche un artista, quindi cosa è stato prima?
R: Come ho già detto DASECA ha iniziato nel 2001 a produrre e Serani ha iniziato con DASECA, e poi è diventato anche un artista, e sta andando alla grande.
D: Molte delle basi del cd intitolato “The Sinphony Of David Brooks” di Mavado sono state fatte da voi, avete fatto hits come “Back It Up” di Beenie Man e la bellissima “What I’m Gonna Do” di Bugle: avete creato un nuovo stile insomma. Da dove traete l’ispirazione per fare questi pezzi?
R: L’ispirazione viene semplicemente dalle natural vibes, amando e creando musica. Molte volte arriva da una vibrazione e poi ci mettiamo un tocco di Hip – Hop e altro. Noi non pensiamo che, siccome uno viene dalla Giamaica, deve fare la Dancehall classica; non importa se la tua musica suona diversamente, è sempre Dancehall.
D: E da dove iniziate a “costruire” una base?
R: Dipende, viene semplicemente dalle vibes, a volte io sto suonando degli accordi alle tastiere e arrivano Serani o mio fratello e ci aggiungono qualcosa, o magari accade il contrario, dipende... D: Come hai già detto, vi avvicinate molto spesso all’ Hip – Hop, come mai questa scelta? E come mai non fate riddims roots – new roots?
R: La Dancehall viene dal Reggae, è come un bambino che cresce e diventa qualcos’altro, all’inizio era solo Reggae, poi in modo molto naturale altre persone hanno iniziato a fare canzoni e a produrre nuovi suoni. Ed ora, DASECA è entrata nel business nel momento della Dancehall, se avessimo iniziato nel periodo di Bob Marley, avremmo fatto solo reggae. Noi facciamo ancora qualcosa tipo “One Drop”, ma anche questo genere di Reggae è comunque diverso dal vecchio Roots, Rocksteady, Reggae. È semplicemente il tempo, cambia tutto.
D: Dopo l’uscita del mixtape “The Journey Continues” di Bugle, uno dei vostri artisti, quali sono i vostri piani per lui?
R: La cosa principale è farlo conoscere in giro, far conoscere il suo nome, il suo sound, e fare in modo che la gente lo ascolti e lo ami, perché ha molto da trasmettere, dice molto nelle sue canzoni. Quindi questa è la prima meta, prima dell’uscita dell’album, così quando arriverà il momento la gente lo aspetterà.
D: Puoi dirci qualcosa riguardo ad un’altra dei vostri artisti, Raine Seville, la voce di “Drive Me Crazy”?
R: È grandiosa, ha una bella voce, è una ragazza attraente e soprattutto ha un grande talento, infatti DASECA lavora solo con gente di talento.
D: Avete qualche anticipazione sui nuovi progetti da dare ai nostri ascoltatori?
R: Semplicemente altra musica in uscita per DASECA, più Serani, più Bugle, più Raine Seville, più Mavado, continuare a fare della buona musica, a rimanere nel business e produrre un buon impatto nel business.

Q: When was your first approach to reggae music? How did you start producing and which where your first riddim productions?
Craig Harrisingh: DASECA Prductions has been going on since 2001, which consistes of 3 people: me, Craig Harrisingh, my brother David Harrisingh and Craig “Serani” Marsh. When we were at the beggining, we started playing bases for other people, like at Don Corleon, and then when we decided to do it for ourselfs, the real first self production was a Riddim which didn’t actually do so well, cause getting in the business is not that easy, you have to play dues. So people would say that our first riddim was Anger Management, this is the one that made us, but before we did many for other people, like for Sean Paul, “We’ll be burning”, or Toni Matterhorn, “Dutty Wine”, or Super Hype.
Q: What does DASECA mean?
A: DASECA basicly comes from a part of each name of us, so “Da” for David , “Se” for Serani and “Ca” for Craig, just putting together our names and getting something that we like, something creative.
Q: Do each of you have a role? Or you all do everything?
A: Well, everybody does everything, which is play keyboard, record and produce.
Q: But Serani is not only a producer, he is also an artist, what was he first?
A: As I said, DASECA has been producing since 2001and Serani has been producing since 2001 and then he has also become an artist, and he is doing real well.
Q: You have produced some of the lastests hits, as many songs for Mavado in his last album or songs for Bugle or Beenie, and with these you have creaed a new style. Where do you take inspiration from?
A: Inspiration comes from a natural vibe, a natural energy, with loving music and creating music. Most of the times it just starts from a vibe, we put some Hip – Hop feel in it and other stuff. We don’t believe that because you come from Jamaica you have to do the regular dancehall; no matter if our music sounds different, it’s still Dancehall.
Q: Are when you creat a riddim/beat, where do you star from?
A: That depends, it just goes with the vibe, sometime i will be playing on the keyboard a junction and then Serani or my brother would come in and do something else, or maybe the other way round, it just depends, it’s just a natural vibe.
Q: As you said, often you put in your songs some sounds of Hip – Hop. Why this choice? Why Dancehall and not Roots or New – Roots?
A: Well, Dancehall comes from Reggae, it’s just like a child growing up and turning to something else, at the beginning it was Reggae alone, Reggae alone, and just with a natural vibe, then other people started making songs, and finding new sounds. And now, DASECA entered the business in the Dancehall time, if we had entered the music in Bob Marley time we would have being doing Reggae. We still do Reggae One Drop stuff but still the One Drop stuff that comes out of Jamaica now is still a different sound from what was real oldtime Roots, RocKsteady Reggae thing, I guess it’s just time, time changes everything.
Q: After releasing the mixtape “The Journey Continues” of Bugle have you got any future plan for him?
A: The main plan for Bugle is to get him out, get the name out there, the sound, and let the people love Bugle and listen to him, cause he has a lot to give, he says a lot in his music. So that’s the main goal before realising the album so when it’s time for the album, people will look for it.
Q: Could you tell us something about Raine Seville, the singer of “Drive Me Crazy”?
A: She is great, she has a beatiful voice, she is a really good looking girl and most of all she has a big talent, and that’s why we chose her, because DASECA works only with talented artists.
Q: Any news for our listeners on your future plans?
A: Just more music coming out of DASECA, more Serani, more Bugle, more Raine Seville, more Movado, just keep on doing good music and staing in the business and giving a good impact on the business.
