Ha prodotto artisti come Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal, Black Ryno e molti altri ancora. Sui suoi riddims hanno inciso tunes come “Weh Dem A Do” di Movado, “Stamma” di Busy Signal, “Watch Dem Roll” di Sean Paul, “Money Fi Spend” di Kartel e “No Friend From Dem” di Mr.Vegas. Noi l’abbiamo intervistato e gli abbiamo chiesto molte curiosità. Buona lettura!
Domanda: Quando è iniziata la tua carriera e la tua passione per il Reggae e la Dancehall?
Stephen: Ho iniziato a fare musica da quando avevo cinque anni, prima ho iniziato a fare il Dj, poi ho fatto una canzone che si chiamava “School Done Rule” che faceva parte della compilation “Reggae for kids”. Ho iniziato in questo modo, successivamente negli anni decisi che mi sentivo più un compositore e stavo meglio dietro le scene. Ho iniziato a produrre dall’età di dieci-undici anni ed è iniziato da lì.
D: Cosa ne pensa del tuo lavoro tuo padre (Freddie McGregor) dato che lui ha sempre fatto Roots Music?
S: è sempre musica alla fine, davanti o dietro le scene, solo in modo diverso, con un sound diverso.
D: A parte il Reggae, quale musica ascolti?
S: Ogni tipo di musica: Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop ovviamente, ogni genere.
D: Ce n’è un tipo che preferisci?
S: No, mi piacciono tutte allo stesso modo.
D: Hai frequentato le scuole? Fino a che età?
S: Fino ai sedici anni, mi sono diplomato nel 2006.
D: Pensi che l’istruzione sia importante nella tua vita?
S: Assolutamente sì, è necessaria perchè la musica è anche business, non è solo stare nello studio o cose simili, è importante sapere tutte queste cose, essere preparati, così puoi gestire sia il lato commerciale delle cose quando sei nel business.
D: Sappiamo che suoni cinque strumenti (violino, chitarra, basso e tastiere), quando hai imparato a suonarli?
S: Non ne ho mai imparato nessuno ufficialmente, ha semplicemente iniziato a “suonicchiare” da autodidatta, non ho mai provato a diventare un musicista nel vero senso della parola. Ho sviluppato le capacità per ogni strumento.
D: Come inizi a comporre un Riddim, un pezzo?
S: Di solito inizio con la batteria e poi ci aggiungo le tastiere e il resto.
D: Sei tu che scegli gli artisti per i tuoi riddims o sono loro che scelgono te e la tua musica?
S: In realtà, quasi sempre sono sempre le stesse persone, è come una famiglia, gli artisti sono spesso in giro e quindi magari sto facendo un pezzo, l’artista lo ascolta e si mette a lavorarci.
D: Hai mischiato due diversi generi di musica, l’Hip-Hop e il Reggae, hai creato un nuovo genere, un nuovo sound. Con le tue produzioni, molti artisti come Movado, Kartel, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal sono arrivati in cima alle classifiche, come ti senti?
S: Hmm... Non ho problemi con nessun artista, loro capiscono la mia posizione, sto solo facendo musica.
D: Com’è il tuo rapporto con Daseca Productions, se ce l’hai?
S: Molto buona, molto buona. Sono miei amici da prima, stiamo in contatto, ci vediamo ogni tanto in giro.
D: Recentemente hai vinto il premio come “Best Producer 2008” agli E.M.E. (Exellence in music and entertainment) Music Awards, te lo aspettavi?
S: Ero là a riceverlo, c’erano due premi, uno per il miglior producer Reggae e uno per il miglior producer Dancehall e io ho avuto quello per la Dancehall. È stato un bel evento.
D: Lavori assieme a Daniel “Chino” McGregor, tuo fratello, com’è lavorare con lui, dato che non è solo un artista ma è soprattutto tuo fratello?
S: Come ho detto, è come lavorare con gli altri artisti, è una cosa data dalle vibes, ognuno sfrutta l’energia dell’altro, condividiamo le idee, è vibe, ed esce musica. Non seguiamo nessuna formalità, andiamo in studio e lavoriamo tranquillamente.
D: Cosa ne pensi degli artisti come Black Ryno e Bramma, pensi che avranno successo?
S: Assolutamente sì, è la nuova generazione, è la nuova ondata dei nuovi artisti, dà completamento al sound che stiamo cercando di creare, le nuove persone che seguono la Dancehall oggi, loro sono gli artisti, i nuovi cantanti che domineranno la scena, che fanno cose come Bounty Killer e Beenie Man e quel set di artisti che le hanno fatte prima.
D: Nei testi di Vybz Kartel, l’artista parla spesso di te in modo positivo, com’è il tuo rapporto con lui? Preferisci l’Alliance o Portmore Empire?
S: Hahaha. Divertente! Non ho preferenze, la mia preferita è BIG SHIP! Non prendo parte a queste questioni personali, o a qualunque politica personale, io faccio le mie cose.
D: Quali dei tuoi riddim preferisci?
S: Hmm. Non ne ho uno che preferisco.
D: Ok, ma quale pensi che sia il migliore, quale ha il miglior sound...
S: Non so. Penso che con ogni riddim che faccio, provo a migliorare in ogni cosa, nel mixing ecc. penso che con il tempo i riddim migliorino. Quindi non ne ho uno che preferisco, non ne ho uno di cui parlare, penso che ognuno di essi sia al proprio posto nel mio percorso lavorativo.
D: Sabato 28 febbraio, qui a Padova, ci sarà il concerto di Aidonia, che cosa dobbiamo aspettarci dal suo show?
S: Ya man! Crazy crazy artist. Credo che sia il miglior songwriter in Giamaica, ora fuori dalla Giamaica dovrei dire. Ho qualche canzone nuova con lui che uscirà molto presto. Farà impazzire la gente!
D: A parte Aidonia hai nuovi progetti per il futuro?
S: Album con gli artisti, nuovi riddim, ho un po’ di nuovi riddim e singoli veramente mad. Cerco di concentrarmi in molte cose con molti artisti come riddim, album singoli e cose del genere.
D: Aspetteremo le tue nuove produzioni e ci sentiremo presto, grazie ancora.

We made an interview with Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, son of the famous singer Freddie McGregor, the maker of the hit “Big Ship”. Stephen is very young and has already produced over 500 riddims, like Shaddowz, Powercut, Day Rave, Day Break, Bee Hive, Tremor, Red Bull & Guinnes, Advocate and Work Out. He has produced artists as Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal, Black Ryno and many more. On his productions many tunes have been recorded, as “Weh Dem A Do” of Movado, “Stamma” of Busy Signal, “Watch Dem Roll” of Sean Paul, “Money Fi Spend” of Kartel and “No Friend From Dem” of Mr.Vegas. Question: When did your carrier start? And when did your passion for Reggae and than Dancehall begin?
Stephen: I started doing music when i was five years old, i started dj’ing at first, i had a song called “School Done Rule”, it was part of a really cool compilation called “Reggae for kids”, i think that is still available digitally. I started that way, but i guess further down in the years i decided that i was more a compositor, doing more behind-the-scenes work, and i started to stay behind the production around the age of about ten-eleven, and there it started.
Q: What does your dad think about your job, since he has always done roots music?
S: Well i mean, it’s just music at the end of the day, in front or behind it, also if in a different way, with different sound.
Q: A part from Reggae, what kind of music do you listen to?
S: Every kind of music, jazz, rock, hip hop of course, every different genre.
Q: And is there one that you prefer?
S: Not really, i would say equal of all of them.
Q: You have gone to school? Till what age?
S: Untill 16, i graduated in 2006.
Q: Do you think education is important in your life?
S: Yeah, defenitly it is, that is necessary, cause music is also business, it’s not just being in the studio or stuff like that, so it’s important to have all of those things, to be prepared, so you can manage the business side of stuff when you are in the business.
Q: We know that you play five instruments (keyboards, bass, guitar and violin), when did you learn?
S: I didn’t learn any of them formally, i just kind of mess around and start myself, i wasn’t tried to be a musician musician, just messing around with all the stuff, and develop the skill in some of them.
Q: Whit which one you start composing a Riddim, your pieces?
S: I usually start out with my drums, most of the times is drums, and then go on from there, adding keyboards adn stuff like that.
Q: Do you pick the artists that sing on your riddims or they choose you and your music?
S: Actually, most of the time is the same set of people, it’s more like a family, all of us have like a link and the artists are always around, so... basicly i’ll be mixing a song and the artists would hear it and just get on it.
Q: Putting together different kind of music, as Reggae and Hip Hop, you have created a new genre, a new sound. With your productions, many artists, big artists as Movado, Kartel, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal have been at the top of the hits, how do you feel about this?
S: Hmm... i’m cool with all artists, they understand my position, i’m just doing music.
Q: How is your relationship with Daseca Production? If you have one?
S: Real good. Real good. They’re friends of mine from even before, i mean all of us are kind of linking, i see them sometimes on the streets, it’s all good.
Q: Recently you have won the price as Best Producer 2008 at the E.M.E. (Exellence in music and entertainment) Music Awards, did you expect it?
S: I was there collecting it, there were two prices, one for reggae and one for dancehall, i got the dancehall one. It was a good event.
Q: You work with Daniel “Chino” McGregor, your brother, how is it working with him, not only as an artist but specially as a brother?
S: Like i said, it’s just like with the other artists, it’s more a vybe thing, we work of each other energy, we share ideas, it’s just vybe, and it just comes out music, we don’t follow something formal, we just go in the studio and we work and be free.
Q: What do you think about new artists as Black Ryno, Bramma, do you think they’re gonna be successful?
S: Yeah, defenitly, it’s the next generation, it’s the new breath of artists, the hole thing that complements the sound of what we are trying to do, the newer people that are following dancehall now, they are the artists, the new singers they are looking to, looking forward to see them dominate, and do stuff like Bounty Killer, Bennie Man and that set of people had done before.
Q: In the lyrics of Vybz Kartel, the singer talks about you often, in a positive way, what kind of relationship do you have? Do you prefer more Alliance or Portmore Empire, since you produce both?
S: Hahaha, that’s funny. I don’t have a preference, my preference is BIG SHIP. I don’t get involved in those personal issues, or any of those personal politics, i just do my things.
Q: Which of your Riddims is you favorite one?
S: Hmmm. I don’t have a favorite.
Q: Ok, but which you think is the best, like the sound...
S: I don’t know, i think that with each of riddim that i do, i try to improve in all of the work as i go along, so in each of them i try something new and try to improve the sound or the mixing or something. I think they’ll only get better with time. So i don’t really have a faovrite one, i don’t have one to speak on, i think all of them are right on their way.
Q: Saturday 28th February, here in Padova, our city, there will be a concert of Aidonia, what do you think about him? What should we expect?
S: Ya man! Crazy crazy artist. I believe one of the best lyricist in Jamiaca, out of jamaica i should say. Hmmm ya man, he has got a crazy vybe. I’ve got some new tunes with him coming out real soon, that’s gonna scare the place out again.
Q: So we’ll be looking forward for them. And a part from these do you have any future projects?
S: Albums with all the artists, more riddims of course, i have number of riddims and singles real crazy. I try to focus in doing many things with the artists, riddims, albums and stuff like that.
